These tactics by defendant and defense counsel should be stopped," the DA's filing said, referring to Trump's attempts to further delay or derail the trial. In its filing Thursday, the DA's office called their arguments "a red herring." Federal prosecutors alleged Cohen paid the women off "in coordination with and at the direction of" Trump, who was not charged in the federal case. The former president has pleaded not guilty in the DA's case. A hearing on the matter is scheduled for Monday, when the judge could set a new trial date.

Multiple insurance firms have balked at Trump’s attempt to finance the bond based on the value of his real estate assets. As always with Trump, there is a legal front and a political one. His claims are inaccurate but appear to be politically effective among his supporters who revile political and legal elites in Washington. Therefore, there are good reasons why James – a Democrat – may seek other legal remedies to secure the judgment. Although his case is historic, Navarro is far from the only ex-Trump associate to serve time in jail.

CNN —Former President Donald Trump’s team is in discussions with Paul Manafort, his 2016 campaign chairman whom he later pardoned, to potentially help with the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee, three sources familiar with the ongoing conversations told CNN. Manafort, who was one of several individuals who ran Trump’s 2016 presidential campaign, was pardoned by Trump after being found guilty of several financial crimes in 2018. Trump has told allies he wanted to bring Manafort back into the fold, but it was unclear in what capacity. The former Trump campaign staffer was found to have committed financial fraud in 2019. Even after resigning as chairman of Trump’s campaign, he was still involved with the former president’s transition to the White House, CNN reported at the time.

After the New York Times acquired Wordle from its creator, software engineer Josh Wardle, in January 2022, its player base grew to tens of millions. The New York Times assigned a dedicated editor for Wordle, Tracy Bennett, in November 2022. “You’re even going to be able to play Wordles that predate the New York Times acquisition, which is really fun,” Knight told CNN. What Wordle has done for the New York TimesAside from the editorial strategy, Wordle fits perfectly into the Times’ business plans. CNN —Although morels are generally considered safe, the mushrooms were at the heart of a deadly illness outbreak in Montana last year. In the end, 51 people reported getting sick after eating there, and 45 of them reported eating the morels during March and April of last year. Most of the customers who got sick reported vomiting and serious/severe diarrhea. The CDC investigation determined that the morel mushrooms were cultivated and imported fresh from China. “A lot of mushrooms have various toxins that get broken down when they’re cooked, and that makes them safer.

which found evidence Biden willfully retained classified materials but that the evidence did not rise to the level of proof beyond a reasonable doubt. And he took on criticism directly over his inclusion of the state of Biden’s memory. On the Republican side, lawmakers pressed Hur on why he didn’t charge Biden despite the evidence of classified documents in Biden’s possession. “In short, to borrow a phrase from the last administration, the Hur report represents the complete and total exoneration of President Biden,” Nadler said. After a yearlong investigation, Hur concluded that Biden mishandled classified material and improperly disclosed classified information as a private citizen. Here are four key things to look for in Tuesday’s high-stakes hearing:What will Hur say about Biden’s age and memory? (At 81, Biden is the oldest US president in history, though Donald Trump is only a few years younger at 77.) House Republicans are looking for Hur’s public testimony to provide fresh momentum to their sputtering impeachment inquiry into Biden. In a letter, the attorney general, Letitia James, also called on the federal agency to consider discouraging the prescription of Singulair, an asthma and allergy drug, to children. Thousands of patients and parents have complained to the F.D.A. about symptoms of anxiety, rage, hallucinations and other psychiatric problems that they linked to the drug, which is also known in its generic form as montelukast. in 2020 to order its most stringent warning on instructions for the drug’s usage.

Putin recently formalized his warming ties with North Korean tyrant Kim Jong Un by presenting him with a new limousine. BERLIN (AP) — An American man on Monday admitted to charges of murder and rape after he allegedly pushed two U.S. women down a ravine, fatally injuring one of them near Germany's Neuschwanstein castle last year. The 31-year-old defendant admitted to the charges during the start of his trial, the German news agency dpa reported. Murder charges carry a maximum sentence of life in prison in Germany. When the elder woman tried to help her, a scuffle ensued and the suspect allegedly pushed her down a steep slope. Authorities say the women didn’t know the man before they met near Neuschwanstein.

DETROIT (AP) — A jury awarded $10 million to a Detroit-area man who spent nearly six years in prison for the killing of a 15-year-old girl before his conviction was thrown out at the request of prosecutors. The jury said Alexandre Ansari's constitutional rights were violated by a Detroit police detective who concealed evidence in the fatal shooting. But the prosecutor's office found that he feared for his family in Texas and Mexico if the drug dealer knew he was investigating him for murder, according to evidence in the case. In 2019, prosecutor Kym Worthy agreed to a "full and complete exoneration" of Ansari, freeing him from a life prison sentence, Mueller said.

The stomach cancer study was shot through with suspicious data. Photos of tumor-stricken mice, used to show that a drug reduced cancer growth, had been featured in two previous papers describing other treatments. The study was then wiped from the internet, leaving behind a barren web page that said nothing about the reasons for its removal. As it turned out, the flawed study was part of a pattern. A medical journal retracted one of them this month after inquiries from The New York Times.

White House and Biden allies have taken aim at Hur for what they view as a gratuitous characterization of the president. White House Counsel Ed Siskel and Robert Bauer, the president’s personal attorney, were in the White House Map Room for the president’s interview with Hur, people briefed on the matter said. It was a mistake for the White House to “put him out on weakness and not strength,” one administration official said. White House officials stood by the forcefulness of the White House’s pushback to Hur’s report, saying not only did Biden take questions from reporters Thursday night, but the next day, White House counsel spokesman Ian Sams joined the press briefing. The White House has also sent a letter to the White House Correspondents’ Association taking issue with news coverage of the Hur report, the officials pointed out, while the Biden campaign has pointed to allies and legal experts questioning aspects of the report that the White House sees as problematic.

CNN —The White House is making its frustration over recent press coverage known. In a letter Tuesday to the White House Correspondents’ Association, Ian Sams, spokesperson for the White House Counsel’s Office, expressed concern over how the news media has covered Special Counsel Robert Hur’s report on President Joe Biden’s handling of classified material. Sams’ letter is yet another step White House officials have taken to push back against press narratives about the report. It’s not just the White House making such arguments though. The White House, of course, knows that it will not be successful in getting news organizations to walk back previous coverage.

Some Democrats are fearful that are entering a "Comey moment" in the wake of special counsel Robert Hur's report. Democrats who are having fever dreams about James Comey shouldn't resort to a full freakout over special counsel Robert Hur's blistering views of President Joe Biden's alleged declining memory. The biggest difference is that Comey made his initial comments in July 2016, months later in the political calendar. Comey also made his statements on camera, a distinction that matters when cable TV producers can cue up old footage months later. Unlike Comey, most of this is under Biden's control.

The man Mr. Garland tapped for the job, Robert K. Hur, has not been quite as cautious. On Thursday, Mr. Hur, 50, a former Justice Department official in the Trump administration, dropped a 345-page political bomb into the middle of the 2024 campaign, the final report summing up his investigation. The Hur report underlines the challenges of deploying special counsels, which are intended to shield prosecutors from political meddling, but often result in the release of negative information about high-profile targets who have been cleared of criminal wrongdoing. It also showed the complicated balance of the job — navigating a polarized environment that leaves little option but to expansively explain the rationale for any decision. Mr. Hur is no stranger to high-wire investigations and legal conflict.

Piracy off the coast of Somalia had been on the decline in recent years after peaking in 2011 when Somali pirates launched 212 attacks. A 2013 World Bank study, still widelt cited today, estimated that piracy cost the global economy around $18 billion annually. The pirates have also been attacking fishing vessels, mostly Iranian, as well as many other small boats such as skiffs. Ocean piracy is rising across the worldData from 2023 shows that by many key measures, piracy is on the rise in key global shipping lanes. There were 120 incidents of maritime piracy and armed robbery against ships reported in 2023, compared to 115 in 2022, according to the annual Piracy and Armed Robbery Report of the ICC International Maritime Bureau (IMB).
